Tensions rise during Health Minister Georgiadis’ visit to Dedeağaç Hospital
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis visited Dedeağaç University Hospital on Tuesday, where his arrival was met with protests by hospital staff over staff shortages.
Georgiadis arrived at the hospital early in the morning and was welcomed by hospital director Vangelis Roufos, his deputy, and board members. The minister then toured newly renovated clinics and departments.
Meanwhile, members of the Thrace Hospital Doctors’ Association and hospital employees gathered at the main entrance, holding banners and chanting slogans. Protesters accused Georgiadis of prioritizing profits over healthcare, chanting: “This is not a health minister, but a minister of commerce and profit.”
Union leader Christodoulos Mendizis told the minister that many staff members had been unable to take their annual leave in 2022 and 2023. He also stressed that nearly 50% of the hospital’s workforce consisted of temporary contract employees.
Georgiadis reacted sharply, retorting: “We take all staff into account—stop with these tricks,” which led to a heated exchange with the union leader.
As the minister entered the hospital building, police blocked protesters from entering, further escalating tensions and causing a brief confrontation.
