Dedeağaç Hospital performs region’s first advanced prostate cancer treatment
Dedeağaç University Hospital has successfully administered Lutetium-177 PSMA therapy for the first time, marking a significant milestone in cancer treatment capabilities across the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.
According to hospital officials, the innovative treatment was recently provided to a patient diagnosed with advanced-stage prostate cancer. Lutetium-177 PSMA is considered one of the most advanced approaches in nuclear oncology, targeting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a molecule found on the surface of prostate cancer cells.
By delivering radiation directly to cancerous cells, the therapy minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue while enhancing treatment precision.
Medical experts describe Lutetium-177 PSMA as a targeted radioisotope therapy that has shown promising results, particularly in patients with advanced prostate cancer or cases that have not responded adequately to conventional treatments.
The introduction of the treatment at Dedeağaç University Hospital is expected to improve access to advanced cancer care for residents of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, reducing the need for patients to travel to larger medical centers elsewhere in Greece.
Hospital authorities stated that the successful implementation of the therapy further strengthens the institution’s capabilities in nuclear medicine and oncology. They added that plans are underway to expand access to similar advanced treatments for more patients in the future.
