MP Zeybek calls for upgrading Xanthi Market to European Standards

Hüseyin Zeybek, MP for the New Left Party and responsible for agriculture and rural development, has submitted an inquiry to the ministry regarding infrastructure improvements for Xanthi’s historic market, aiming to elevate it to European standards. Zeybek highlighted that the market, with its rich historical value, is currently insufficiently equipped to protect vendors, producers, and consumers, especially in harsh weather. Temporary stalls and coverings fail to adequately protect goods, forcing people to abandon the market during bad weather.
He emphasized that improving the infrastructure to meet European market standards—such as providing weather-resistant coverings and enhancing safety measures—would attract more visitors and benefit local producers economically. In his parliamentary inquiry, Zeybek asked if any projects or plans have been developed so far for these improvements.
Zeybek posed the following questions to the ministers:
What steps are being considered to modernize and secure Xanthi’s market to ensure it meets European standards?
Has any work been conducted toward this goal, and can documentation be provided?
How does the Ministry of Development plan to support Xanthi’s vendors, who are struggling amidst the economic crisis under the current government?
