Özgür Ferhat calls for stronger West Nile virus measures in Rhodope

Rodopi MP Özgür Ferhat has called on the Greek government to intensify mosquito control measures in the region amid an increase in reported West Nile virus cases across Greece.

Ferhat submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministries of Health, Interior, and Environment and Energy, urging the authorities to take immediate measures to protect public health, particularly in Rhodope.

Ferhat highlights rising mosquito activity
Ferhat pointed to agricultural and irrigation areas, canals, wetlands and other water sources across Rodopi as potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

He said he had received numerous reports from residents about increased mosquito activity in the region and stressed the need for regular spraying in high-risk areas, alongside the timely identification of mosquito breeding sites.

MP asks government for detailed information
Ferhat asked the government to provide data on the number of mosquito-control operations carried out in Rodopi in 2026, the areas covered and the methods used.

He also requested information on whether the financial resources, personnel and technical capabilities allocated to mosquito control are sufficient.

In addition, Ferhat asked whether potential mosquito breeding sites have been mapped and called for an assessment of coordination between the National Public Health Organization (EODY), the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region, municipalities and other relevant authorities.

“Prevention must begin before cases emerge”
Ferhat argued that public health protection cannot rely solely on treatment after infections have already occurred, emphasizing the importance of prevention, continuous monitoring and timely intervention.

“Effective action requires prevention, continuous monitoring and timely intervention,” Ferhat said, calling on the government to immediately strengthen mosquito spraying, entomological surveillance and public awareness efforts in Rhodope.
