Independent MP raises school safety concerns in İskeçe parliament
Independent İskeçe MP Hüseyin Zeybek has brought concerns over the structural safety of the 2nd and 3rd Junior High Schools in İskeçe before the Hellenic Parliament, calling for the release of technical documents and clarification over who is legally responsible for the schools’ safe operation.
Zeybek has submitted a parliamentary question following concerns raised by technical findings regarding the safety of the school complex, which is used daily by hundreds of students and teachers.
Structural concerns reportedly identified in 2023
According to information cited in Zeybek’s parliamentary intervention, structural deficiencies in the school buildings had already been identified in May 2023.
The findings reportedly led to the activation of a contractual provision for the preparation of a structural reinforcement study. Further structural calculations were delivered to the Municipality of İskeçe in April 2025, with the results reportedly indicating continued structural inadequacy within the school complex.
Despite these developments, the schools continued to operate and accommodate students and teaching staff on a daily basis.
Zeybek has questioned why the Municipality of İskeçe approached KTIP S.A., Greece’s state-owned organization responsible for school and public building infrastructure, only in August 2026 to seek assistance in determining whether the school buildings remained suitable for operation.
MP seeks technical documents and responsibility clarification
Zeybek is requesting that the government submit all relevant technical documentation concerning the school complex from 2021 to the present to Parliament.
He is also seeking clarification on which institution ultimately held responsibility for allowing the schools to remain open and whether temporary relocation of students was considered.
The independent MP has further requested detailed information on the structural reinforcement works considered necessary, including their estimated cost, timetable and funding sources.
Call for immediate independent safety inspection
Zeybek is also calling for an immediate independent technical inspection of the school complex before full operation continues.
The MP argues that the situation requires clear institutional accountability, particularly given that concerns over the structural adequacy of the buildings were reportedly raised as early as 2023 and followed by further technical findings in 2025.
Concluding his parliamentary intervention, Zeybek called for authorities to explicitly identify which institution and official currently bears responsibility for the safe operation of İskeçe’s 2nd and 3rd Junior High Schools.
