Kasselakis alleges conviction over wealth declaration was politically motivated
Stefanos Kasselakis, leader of the Movement for Democracy party, has described his conviction over a discrepancy in the wealth declaration he submitted while he was president of leftist opposition SYRIZA as politically motivated.
Earlier, a court sentenced him to a 30-month suspended prison term and fined €50,000.
“Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ Greece is putting its children on trial – putting our clean hands on trial – while convicted pedophiles walk free. This, from a ruling party that owes half a billion euros, yet won’t spend €100,000 on a remote-control system, with the tragic result of children losing their lives. And all the while, a supposedly independent judiciary acts with political motives,” he said in a TikTok video.
Kasselakis highlighted that the prosecutor had recommended acquittal and said the decision reflected a broader issue of public distrust in the justice system.
Politicians, journalists and other public or high-profile figures are required to submit an annual declaration listing all of their assets, including the balance of their bank accounts, stock holdings, etc. as well as any businesses or business partnerships they may be involved in.
