Gerapetritis: Greece will respond to any unilateral move by Türkiye
Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis has said Athens does not want tensions with Türkiye to escalate but will respond to any “unilateral or aggressive” actions by Ankara.
Speaking to Parapolitika radio, Gerapetritis said Greece remains committed to dialogue with Türkiye while maintaining its core positions on the issues dividing the two countries.
Athens says dialogue has helped prevent major crises
Assessing Greek-Turkish relations, Gerapetritis said a structured dialogue mechanism had been established between Athens and Ankara following the Athens Declaration.
According to the Greek foreign minister, the purpose of the dialogue is to prevent tensions from developing into major crises.
Gerapetritis acknowledged that Greece and Türkiye continue to maintain fundamentally different positions on a number of issues but argued that the dialogue process has helped the two sides avoid major confrontations.
He said Türkiye continues to advance positions concerning the “Blue Homeland” doctrine, so-called “grey zones” in the Aegean and the demilitarization of the Greek islands.
Greece, he added, will continue raising these issues in international forums.
At the same time, Gerapetritis stressed that Athens does not seek an escalation in bilateral tensions.
“We will respond to any arbitrary or aggressive move by Türkiye,” he said, while reiterating Greece’s intention to maintain channels of communication with Ankara.
Greece-Cyprus electricity link expected to move forward
Gerapetritis also addressed the planned Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project.
He said the project is expected to proceed in the coming months according to the implementing company’s schedule.
The foreign minister indicated that the laying of the subsea electricity cable could begin within 2026.
The project, which is designed to establish an electricity connection between Greece and Cyprus, remains a strategically important issue for Athens amid broader energy and geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
