Tsipras set to launch new party, reshaping Greece’s Centre-Left
Former Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras is set to launch a new political party this week, in a move expected to reshape the country’s centre-left political landscape.
The party’s name, manifesto and leadership team will be presented on Tuesday evening at an event in Thiseio, central Athens.
In a symbolic social media post, Tsipras revealed the party’s colour identity as blue and red, describing them as “the blue of our country and the red of our struggles.”
SYRIZA fragmentation accelerates
The announcement comes amid growing fragmentation in SYRIZA and the wider left, with several figures already moving closer to Tsipras’ initiative.
Prominent SYRIZA member Dionysis Temponeras has resigned to support the new party, while other departures from the New Left are also expected. SYRIZA Secretary Stergios Kalpakis has stepped down from his post, citing hopes for future unity in the progressive space.
Tsipras, however, is not expected to negotiate with existing parties and has reportedly asked MPs from SYRIZA and New Left to give up their seats if they join his project.
Wider political realignment underway
The political shift comes as Greece’s centre-left becomes increasingly crowded, with SYRIZA, New Left, PASOK and the upcoming Tsipras party competing for influence.
Analysts say the key rivalry is emerging between Tsipras and PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis, both positioning themselves against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and New Democracy.
While PASOK emphasizes institutional stability, Tsipras’ new party is seen as adopting a more confrontational tone, with political competition increasingly driven by leadership dynamics and post-crisis voter sentiment rather than clear ideological divides.
