Poll puts Tsipras' new party well ahead of opposition rivals
Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ newly launched Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) has opened a substantial lead over rival opposition parties, according to a poll published on Wednesday.
The RealPolls survey for the Protagon.gr news website projected that the ruling New Democracy party would win 28.3% of the vote if an election were held today, while ELAS would secure 21.4%, up more than five percentage points from the previous poll conducted in May.
Railway safety campaigner Maria Karystianou’s Hope for Democracy was projected to receive 11.9%, while the Socialist PASOK party, currently the main opposition force in parliament, was estimated at 9.9%.
The poll also showed the Greek Communist Party, Greek Solution, Voice of Reason and Course of Freedom above the 3% threshold required for parliamentary representation.
Tsipras’ former party, SYRIZA, was projected to receive 1.2% of the vote.
The nationwide telephone survey was conducted between June 20 and June 22 among 1,537 respondents and had a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
