Syriza loses more MPs as internal crisis deepens
Greece’s opposition Syriza has been reduced to 17 MPs after Alexandros Meikopoulos, Haris Mamoulakis and Marina Kontotoli announced their departure from the party’s parliamentary group and became independents.
The latest defections push Syriza below the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), which now has 21 MPs, making Syriza the fourth-largest parliamentary group. The party had won 47 seats in the June 2023 elections.
The number of independent MPs in parliament has now risen to 47, following a series of departures from Syriza in recent months.
Leadership battle and political realignment
Syriza MP Rena Dourou said she is willing to run for the party leadership, calling for unity and cooperation within the left-wing political space. She also supported dialogue with New Left, saying broader alliances are needed.
Extraordinary congress for New Left
Meanwhile, New Left leader Gavriil Sakellaridis announced that the party will hold an extraordinary congress in October 2026 and said it will participate in the next national elections.
Sakellaridis said New Left is seeking a political restart and appealed to Syriza members who remain committed to left-wing values to consider joining its ranks, as Greece’s opposition parties continue to face internal divisions and restructuring.
