Calls for livestock support measures in eastern Macedonia and Thrace

Independent İskeçe MP Huseyin Zeybek has submitted a question to the Greek parliament calling for immediate support and reconstruction measures for the livestock sector in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Zeybek said livestock farmers in the region are facing a sharp decline in animal numbers, rising production costs, inadequate compensation and the impact of animal diseases and restrictive measures introduced in recent years.

Farmers highlight long-standing problems

Livestock associations have also pointed to persistent problems, including a lack of infrastructure, delays in grazing management plans, shortages in veterinary services, weak controls on imports and insufficient support for rebuilding livestock numbers.

The İskeçe (Xanthi) MP requested official data on changes in livestock farms and animal populations over the past seven years and asked the government what measures will be taken to replace animals lost due to diseases and mandatory culling.

He also called for additional support for feed, energy and operating costs, a clear timeline for grazing management plans, and a special program to support and attract young livestock farmers in the border areas of Thrace.
