Frozen infant found in suitcase during Athens police search

Greek police are investigating the death of an infant whose frozen body was found inside a container in a suitcase during a search of an apartment in the Kypseli district of Athens on Sunday.

The investigation began after the owner of a short-term rental apartment on Thasou Street reported to police that a family staying there had failed to pay rent and that drugs were allegedly being used at the property.

Police entered the apartment after a patrol from the DIAS motorcycle unit stopped nearby and was alerted by the owner.

Six people were found inside the apartment, including a 43-year-old Greek man, his 28-year-old German wife, their three minor children and a 26-year-old Afghan man who reportedly described himself as the partner of the couple’s 15-year-old daughter.

Drug allegations

The father, the Afghan man and the 15-year-old girl were initially taken to a local police station after officers allegedly found small quantities of drugs in their possession.

When officers returned to the apartment to conduct a search, they found the German woman preparing to leave with her two younger sons. Their luggage had reportedly been packed.

During the search, officers opened one of the suitcases and found a container holding the frozen body of an infant.

Mother questioned

According to police sources cited in Greek media, the woman told officers that the infant was her child and that it had died.

She reportedly said she had kept the body in a freezer for preservation. When asked how long it had been there, she initially said one to two years and later said about eight months.

The family members were taken to the Athens Security Sub-Directorate for questioning. Authorities are taking statements as they seek to establish what happened and the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.

Forensic examination pending

Police are also expected to question neighbors as part of the investigation.

A forensic examination and autopsy will be carried out after the infant's body has thawed, authorities said, to help determine the approximate time and cause of death.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet established whether the infant died of natural causes, from an accident or as a result of criminal activity.
