SYRIZA MP resigns seat to join Tsipras' new left-wing party
SYRIZA lawmaker Giorgos Karameros has resigned from both the party and his parliamentary seat to support former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' newly established Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).
Karameros informed SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos of his decision before submitting his resignation, saying he would continue to support Tsipras' political initiative as "an active citizen" and a "simple soldier" in what he described as a broad progressive alliance of social democracy, the left and political ecology.
First elected to parliament in 2023, Karameros said he had backed Tsipras' initiative from the beginning and believed ELAS offered "a perspective for Greece."
Tsipras, who led SYRIZA until 2023, has said that current lawmakers wishing to join ELAS must first relinquish their parliamentary seats.
Karameros' departure came a day after former SYRIZA spokesman Kostas Zachariadis also resigned from the party and announced his support for Tsipras' new political movement.
