Greek politician Dionysis Kalamatianos has announced his resignation from parliament and declared his political support for former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and his Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).

Kalamatianos said he had submitted a resignation letter to the president of the Hellenic Parliament, describing his decision as a matter of political conviction, consistency and responsibility.

In a statement published on Friday, he argued that Greece needed a strong, democratic and progressive political force capable of challenging the current government’s policies.

He criticised the government over what he described as rising living costs, widening inequalities, impoverishment and the weakening of institutions and the rule of law.

“A STRONG, PROGRESSIVE POLITICAL FORCE”

Kalamatianos said a political formation with the potential to govern was needed to bring about a change in policy towards a more progressive direction.

He expressed confidence that ELAS and Tsipras could unite supporters and bring about political change, declaring that he was aligning with them “politically, programmatically and emotionally.”

He also thanked supporters who had stood by him throughout his political career, saying he would remain active in political and social life.

FROM SYRIZA TO ELAS

Kalamatianos’s resignation follows his departure from the left-wing SYRIZA party and his decision to become an independent MP in July 2026. His move towards Tsipras’s political formation had been the subject of media speculation in recent weeks.

His resignation marks a further development in the political realignment of Greece’s left-wing opposition, as Tsipras’s new party seeks to consolidate support among progressive political figures.

According to Greek media reports, Zoe Anastasopoulou is next in line to take Kalamatianos’s parliamentary seat.

The resignation and political alignment were reported by Greek media on October 23. The supplied reports do not include a response from the government or other political parties.
