Greece braces for 48-hour storm system as heavy rain and flooding risk rise

Greece is expected to face a significant spell of unsettled weather from Sunday afternoon, October 25, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, falling temperatures and an increased risk of flooding, according to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis of Open TV.

Monday and Tuesday, October 26–27, are forecast to be the most challenging days, particularly across central, eastern and southern Greece. Areas including Attica, Evia, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the eastern Aegean are expected to experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Marousakis said northern and northeastern Greece would likely be less affected than other parts of the country.

STORMS TO MOVE IN FROM THE WEST
The weather is expected to remain relatively mild on Friday, with scattered showers mainly in eastern and northern areas. Temperatures are forecast to reach 24–26°C in the afternoon.

Temperatures are then expected to fall by around 4–6°C over Saturday and Sunday as colder air moves into the country.

Saturday is forecast to remain generally settled, although light rain may affect parts of the Aegean. The weather is expected to deteriorate from Sunday afternoon, initially in western Greece, as rain and locally severe thunderstorms move in from the Adriatic region towards the Ionian Sea.

The storms are forecast to spread eastward and southward through Sunday evening.

FLOODING RISK ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY
Central, eastern and southern Greece are expected to be most exposed to the storm system on Monday and Tuesday. Areas forecast to receive substantial rainfall include central and eastern Central Greece, Attica, Evia, southern Thessaly, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the eastern Aegean.

The forecast points to a heightened risk of flooding in areas affected by persistent or intense rainfall. Northern and northeastern Greece are expected to see less severe conditions.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR OCTOBER 28
Conditions are expected to improve on Wednesday, October 28, Greece’s national holiday. The storm system is forecast to weaken and retreat towards eastern and southern maritime areas.

Northern Greece, including Selanik, is not expected to experience significant weather impacts on the national holiday, according to Marousakis’s forecast.

The outlook is based on the forecast published by Greek news outlet EfSyn on October 23. Forecasts may change, so residents and visitors should follow updated information and official weather and civil protection advisories.
