A severe summer storm caused widespread flooding and significant damage in eastern Mani, in Greece’s Laconia region, on Saturday, August 15, with roads turning into rivers, homes and tourist facilities flooded, and vehicles swept away by floodwaters.

The storm hit the Mani area of the Peloponnese Peninsula with intense rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly affecting settlements including Oitylo, Alika, Kokkala, Exo Nymfio and surrounding areas. Local authorities described the scale of the flooding as unprecedented.

141 millimeters of rain recorded in four hours
According to data from Meteo.gr, affiliated with the National Observatory of Athens, approximately 141 millimeters of rain fell in Kokkala, Mani, within around four hours.

The same data showed nearly 2,000 lightning discharges across the area over a six-hour period, highlighting the exceptional intensity of the storm.

Heavy rainfall quickly sent water rushing down from the surrounding hillsides and onto local roads. Mud and rocks accumulated on several routes, disrupting transportation, while sections of the road network reportedly sustained significant damage.

Homes and tourist facilities flooded
Floodwaters affected not only roads but also residential properties and tourist facilities across eastern Mani. In some low-lying areas, water reportedly reached window level before entering homes and accommodation facilities.

Several vehicles were also caught in the floodwaters and swept away. Some drivers became trapped inside their vehicles before Greek Fire Service crews intervened and evacuated them to safety.

Authorities reported significant damage to roads around Kokkala, Nimfi, Exo Nymfio and Lagia.

Woman injured by lightning strike
A woman who became trapped in her vehicle during the storm was struck by lightning and injured. Emergency medical teams transported her to hospital, while Greek media reported that her condition was being monitored.

Yorgos Exarchakos, Deputy Head of Civil Protection for eastern Mani, described the incident as an unprecedented event for the area and highlighted the serious damage sustained by parts of the local road network.

Authorities said the absence of fatalities was the most positive aspect of the incident.

Damage assessment continues
Municipal crews and fire service units continued operations in the affected areas following the storm. Authorities also began assessing the extent of damage to the road network and other infrastructure.

The flooding in Mani, a popular tourist destination experiencing high seasonal activity in August, has once again highlighted the risks posed by intense rainfall in mountainous and sloping areas. Authorities warned that floodwaters can move rapidly through such terrain, creating significant risks within a very short period.
