Despite a significant rise in rainfall, Greece is facing a growing paradox: increased risks of both drought and flooding, driven by ineffective water management and infrastructure gaps.

Recent reports in Greek media indicate that rainfall in 2026 has increased by approximately 25% compared to the previous year. However, a large portion of this water is not being effectively captured or stored, leading to substantial losses.

Intense Rainfall Patterns Limit Water Absorption
According to Konstantinos Voudouris, a hydrogeology professor at Aristotle University of Selanik, changing rainfall patterns are a key factor behind the problem.

He explained that rainfall events are now shorter but more intense, which reduces the ability of water to infiltrate the soil. Instead, much of the rainwater flows rapidly over the surface and is lost to the sea.

Voudouris noted that soil absorption capacity is limited, and after consecutive rainfall events, the ground quickly becomes saturated—preventing further water from penetrating into underground reserves.

Urbanization and Infrastructure Gaps Worsen the Problem
Rapid urban expansion has further compounded the issue. The spread of concrete and asphalt surfaces limits natural water absorption, while existing stormwater infrastructure remains insufficient in many areas.

As a result, rainwater that could replenish groundwater instead contributes to surface runoff and flooding risks.

Lack of Water Storage Capacity
Experts also point to the absence of small and medium-scale dams and reservoirs capable of capturing rainwater. Without adequate storage infrastructure, excess rainfall cannot be retained for future use—exacerbating drought conditions during dry periods.

Growing Climate Challenge
The situation highlights a broader challenge for Greece as it grapples with the impacts of climate variability: managing water resources efficiently in an era of extreme and unpredictable weather patterns.
