SYRIZA postpones central committee meeting after leadership resignations
Greece's leftist SYRIZA party has postponed an extraordinary meeting of its central committee that had been scheduled for Saturday, following the resignation of party leader Sokratis Famellos.
In a statement, the party said its political secretariat will meet on Monday to begin the process of electing a new leader and to set a new date for the central committee meeting.
The postponement follows disagreements within the party, with members of the internal opposition reportedly favoring the meeting going ahead, while interim leader Anastasia Sapouna supported delaying it.
Famellos resigned on Thursday as SYRIZA continues to grapple with internal divisions and uncertainty over its future, amid the broader fragmentation of Greece's left following the formation of the New Left party in 2023 and the recent launch of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).
Senior officials step down
The political turmoil deepened as George Karameros formally resigned his parliamentary seat after announcing his decision to join ELAS. He said he supported Tsipras' new political initiative because he believes it offers "prospects for Greece."
Under parliamentary rules, the seat is expected to pass to the first alternate candidate in the Eastern Attica constituency, Christos Spirtzis, or, if he declines, to Myrto Korovesi.
Meanwhile, Dionysis Kalamatianos also resigned as secretary of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance parliamentary group, describing his decision as the result of "mature consideration."
