Greece to acquire two Italian FREMM frigates in new naval deal
Greece and Italy are moving forward with an agreement for the acquisition of two Italian FREMM frigates from the Bergamini class, strengthening the Hellenic Navy’s operational capabilities.
The Greek Ministry of National Defence announced on Wednesday that the Implementing Arrangement for the purchase of the two Italian-built warships will be signed in Rome on September 8, 2026.
Two Bergamini-class frigates
The agreement covers two frigates belonging to Italy’s Bergamini class, the Italian variant of the FREMM (European Multi-Mission Frigate) programme.
The vessels are expected to join the Hellenic Navy as part of Greece’s ongoing efforts to enhance its naval capabilities. The acquisition is intended to strengthen the fleet’s operational capacity and expand its ability to conduct a range of maritime missions.
The signing of the Implementing Arrangement in Rome represents the next major step toward completing the acquisition process for the two Italian FREMM frigates.
The agreement further deepens defence cooperation between Greece and Italy, as Athens continues to invest in the modernization and reinforcement of its armed forces.
