SYRIZA leader Famellos steps down amid party divisions
Sokratis Famellos resigned Thursday as leader of Greece’s left-wing SYRIZA party, opening the way for a leadership contest as the party faces internal divisions and questions over its future.
Famellos said he was stepping down at a critical moment for the broader center-left, after taking over SYRIZA during what he described as its most difficult period.
He said he was proud of efforts to rebuild the party’s credibility, strengthen its parliamentary presence and improve its finances.
The resignation comes amid continued fragmentation on Greece’s left, following the 2023 breakaway that formed the New Left party and the recent launch of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ ELAS (Greek Left Alliance) party.
Famellos criticized divisions within the left and said he could not support a different political direction. He said he would remain a SYRIZA lawmaker and member.
