SYRIZA rises to 12 MPs as number of independent lawmakers reaches 48
The number of SYRIZA lawmakers in the Greek Parliament has increased to 12, while independent MPs are set to reach 48 following two new parliamentary appointments.
Zoi Anastassopoulou and Giorgos Varemenos were sworn in as members of parliament, replacing Dionysis Kalamatianos and Miltos Zambaras, who resigned from their parliamentary seats last week to join Alexis Tsipras' newly established ELAS party.
One new SYRIZA MP, one expected independent
Anastassopoulou will remain a member of SYRIZA's parliamentary group, increasing its strength by one seat.
Varemenos, however, has announced that he intends to submit a formal declaration of independence from the party, meaning he will join the ranks of independent lawmakers.
Following the changes, SYRIZA will have 12 MPs, while the number of independent members of parliament is expected to rise to 48.
The developments mark another shift in the composition of Greece's Parliament following the recent political realignments surrounding Tsipras' new political initiative.
