SYRIZA Central Committee approves Famelos proposal for political alignment with Tsipras’ “ELAS”
The Central Committee of Greece’s left-wing SYRIZA party approved by a wide majority a proposal by party leader Sokratis Famelos to pursue political convergence with “ELAS,” the newly established political formation founded by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
During his concluding remarks, Famelos rejected all submitted amendments, stating that the main positions of the proposals were already reflected in the draft resolution under discussion. While he expressed partial agreement with a proposal submitted by a group known as the “8,” he argued that its core content was already incorporated into the party’s official text.
Famelos also firmly dismissed an amendment submitted by senior party figures Pavlos Polakis, Nikos Pappas, and Rena Dourou, stressing that “there is no room for a plan B.” He added that the approved framework already provides a clear roadmap and programmatic direction.
Addressing internal disagreements, the SYRIZA leader questioned why the party should revisit a proposal previously rejected by the Central Committee in March. He also suggested that the rejected amendment raised implicit leadership issues and lacked sufficient argumentation.
Famelos concluded by emphasizing that the “real left-wing response” lies in initiatives aimed at politically challenging and ultimately overturning the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Following the session, Pavlos Polakis remarked as he left the venue, “We remain in the party; we are not handing it over to anyone,” underscoring ongoing internal tensions within SYRIZA.
The decision highlights continuing ideological and strategic debates within the party as it seeks to redefine its political direction in Greece’s evolving opposition landscape.
