Resignations deepen crisis within SYRIZA
A wave of resignations has intensified the political crisis within Greece's main left-wing opposition party, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, with dozens of senior officials and lawmakers announcing their departure.
On Thursday, 63 members of the party's Central Committee resigned, saying they were protesting "behaviors of introversion" that had undermined the principles and values they had long defended. In a joint statement, they expressed hope that the broader progressive movement could regain its unity and called for a collective renewal of the left.
The exodus continued on Friday, with Deputy Parliament Speaker Olga Gerovassili announcing that she would leave SYRIZA's parliamentary group and continue as an independent MP. She said the timing of her departure had been coordinated with the Speaker of Parliament to avoid disrupting parliamentary procedures.
Former minister Giannis Ragousis also resigned from the party, thanking SYRIZA members and officials with whom he had "fought common battles" since 2019.
Meanwhile, MP Miltiadis Zambaras submitted his resignation from the parliamentary group and will also continue as an independent lawmaker.
The latest departures further weaken SYRIZA's parliamentary strength and underscore deepening internal divisions as the party struggles to redefine its direction.
