Greece to introduce postal voting in national elections
Greece will introduce postal voting for national elections for the first time, Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios said Monday, while ruling out any change to the country’s electoral law ahead of the next parliamentary elections.
Livanios said the government is examining changes to the voting procedure, but stressed that the electoral system itself will remain unchanged.
“The essence of the electoral law is not changing,” Livanios said in an interview with ERTnews.
Postal voting extended to national elections
Postal voting has previously been used by Greeks living abroad in European Parliament elections. The system will now be extended to national elections.
Livanios urged eligible Greek citizens living or staying abroad to complete the necessary application in good time.
“They can apply from today until the day after the dissolution of parliament,” he said, referring to Greeks abroad who have the right to vote.
The minister said the changes concern the practical organization of elections rather than the rules governing the electoral system.
Government plans procedural improvements
Livanios reiterated that the government is not preparing to alter the electoral law.
“From there, we are studying various improvements to the electoral process, not to the electoral law,” he said.
The government is therefore focusing on changes designed to improve the way elections are conducted, while keeping the existing electoral system in place.
