An informal inter-party committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the government’s proposal on postal voting for Greek citizens living abroad and the creation of a three-seat electoral district for expatriates.

Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios presented the draft bill to the Cabinet on Monday, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The proposal allows Greek citizen voters living abroad to cast their ballots by post and to elect three members of parliament dedicated to representing the diaspora.

Under the plan, postal voting would follow the system used in the 2024 European elections. Eligible voters abroad would apply electronically shortly after elections are called, receive their ballots by mail and return them free of charge before polling day. The measure would apply only to voters who are overseas on election day.

The bill also establishes an expatriate electoral district with three parliamentary seats. If it fails to secure the required two-thirds majority in parliament, the provision would not apply to the 2027 elections but to later contests.

Livanios has invited all parties to discuss the initiative at a meeting scheduled for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Ministry of the Interior.
