September starts with summer heat up to 37 c

Weather conditions will remain generally fair across most of the country, although local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon, mainly in western and northern regions and particularly in mountainous areas.

ERTnews meteorologist Giorgos Emmanouil said temperatures would remain high over the coming days, with readings expected to stay around 35-37 degrees.

Winds reach 7 beaufort

Northwesterly winds in western Greece will reach up to 4 beaufort.

In the Aegean, northerly winds will strengthen, reaching 6 beaufort initially and up to 7 beaufort over the coming days, creating locally difficult conditions.

Meanwhile, atmospheric instability will persist mainly across central and northern mainland Greece, bringing localized showers during the warmer hours of the day.

Forecast for Athens and Thessaloniki

Athens will see generally good weather, with a few clouds developing around midday.

Temperatures will range from 24 to 36 degrees, while northerly winds in the eastern parts of the Attica region will reach up to 5 beaufort.

Thessaloniki will also experience generally good conditions, although localized showers are possible in surrounding mountainous areas during the afternoon.

Winds will remain light, reaching up to 3 beaufort, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 34 degrees.

Humidity expected to rise

Despite the calendar shift into autumn, nighttime temperatures remain relatively high and cooler evening conditions have yet to become particularly noticeable.

Humidity is also expected to increase during September, potentially making the heat feel more intense. Much of this summer was characterized by relatively low humidity levels.

High fire risk in several regions

Authorities are also urging increased caution because of elevated wildfire risk in several parts of the country.

A yellow alert for high fire danger is in effect for eastern Central Greece, Evia, northern Peloponnese, southern Laconia and most islands in the central and southern Aegean.

The North Aegean islands are not included in the alert.

Increased vigilance remains necessary as Greece is still within the wildfire season.

The hot weather is expected to continue through Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures remaining around 35-37 degrees.

The main change will be the strengthening northerly winds in the Aegean, which could reach up to 7 beaufort.

Localized showers are also expected to continue across central and northern mainland Greece, mainly in mountainous areas during the afternoon.
