Mitsotakis seeks third term as tensions grow across Greek politics
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said his government would seek a third consecutive term in office, stressing unity, economic growth and reform during a speech closing the ruling New Democracy congress on Sunday.
Mitsotakis said Greece was “more united than ever” and warned against a return to political instability. He highlighted falling unemployment, rising wages and Greece’s recovery of investment-grade status as key achievements since 2019.
The prime minister also pledged to continue reforms focused on economic growth, artificial intelligence, public services and infrastructure ahead of elections scheduled for 2027.
Dendias warns over falling support
Earlier at the congress, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias warned that declining poll numbers for New Democracy should serve as a “wake-up call”.
Dendias urged party officials to reconnect with voters and avoid complacency, saying the government’s 2023 election victory was “not a blank cheque”.
He also pointed to the party’s weaker performance in the European Parliament elections as a sign of growing voter dissatisfaction.
SYRIZA expels Polakis after leadership clash
Meanwhile, Greece’s main opposition SYRIZA expelled lawmaker Pavlos Polakis from its parliamentary group after a public dispute with party leader Sokratis Famellos.
Polakis had criticised the leadership for “silence” and “indecision” in a social media post, while also raising concerns about divisions within Greece’s broader left-wing opposition.
Famellos dismissed the accusations as damaging and accused Polakis of undermining party unity during a sensitive political period.
