Deputy PM: Lifting MPs’ immunity key to transparency in EPPO case
Speaking to Parapolitika FM, he noted that MPs are expected to support the move themselves, calling it a step that “protects both the party and the MPs” while allowing the truth to emerge.
Hatzidakis said he has been in contact with lawmakers named in the case file of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, urging them to speak publicly and present their evidence. Many, he added, dispute how the case has been portrayed and point to information not yet disclosed.
He clarified that lifting immunity does not automatically lead to trial, as authorities will assess whether offenses constitute misdemeanors or felonies before deciding on further legal action.
The deputy prime minister also called for faster procedures by the EPPO, given the case’s political sensitivity, while warning against any impression of interference in domestic affairs.
Separately, he backed a proposal by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to bar ministers from serving simultaneously as MPs, describing constitutional reform as a chance to “restart Greek democracy.”
