West Nile Virus cases detected in Kozlukebir and Maronia

Two cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in the municipalities of Kozlukebir and Maronia-Sapes in the Rhodope region, according to a report published by the National Public Health Organization (EODY).

The weekly epidemiological report, covering the period from August 7 to August 14, indicates that one of the cases detected in Kozlukebir exhibited Central Nervous System (CNS) symptoms. Meanwhile, the case in Maronia-Sapes did not lead to CNS-related symptoms.

Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 76 cases have been recorded across Greece. Among these, 57 cases have shown severe symptoms, including encephalitis, meningitis, or acute paralysis. The remaining 19 cases either presented with mild symptoms or were asymptomatic.

The report notes that 21 of these 76 cases have been identified in the past week alone, raising concerns among health officials. Most of those affected by the virus are over the age of 60, with an average age of 80 among those who have died from the virus.

Additionally, two of the cases were reported to have contracted the virus abroad before entering Greece.
