A 59-year-old house painter of Georgian origin, arrested for espionage in Alexandroupoli, has been remanded in custody following his testimony.

According to public broadcaster ERT, the suspect claimed that he had no intention of harming Greece’s interests and argued that the photographs he took, depicting the transport of military equipment, had already been repeatedly published in the media.

Born in Georgia in 1966, the man completed his military service before relocating permanently to Greece. He worked as a house painter and had no prior criminal record.

Reports indicate that authorities found evidence on his mobile phone suggesting he had been monitoring military installations in Alexandroupoli for at least six months. He is accused of taking photos and videos, which he then allegedly forwarded to his handler.

His handler had been under surveillance by Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) since August of last year. He is said to have ties to organized crime and a criminal record spanning both Greece and abroad. He was reportedly arrested in Lithuania in March.
