A 55-year-old Turkish national has been arrested in Alexandroupoli-northern Greece on charges of smuggling firearms and ammunition after he was reportedly found adrift at sea off the coast of Alexandroupoli in a boat carrying 61 guns and more than 2,900 rounds of ammunition

Specifically, a Coast Guard patrol vessel was dispatched to the drifting vessel and managed to bring its sole passenger safely to shore, where a document check revealed him to be a 55-year-old Turkish citizen who had been flagged by the European Union’s Schengen Information System (SIS) and an inspection of the vessel turned up the guns and ammunition.

The 55-year-old was transported to the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, where he remains under guard, while the seized contraband has been sent for further investigation and forensic examination.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, authorities located a private vehicle owned by the 55-year-old suspect in Alexandroupoli.
