Yassıköy municipality submits six development projects to government
Imam took part in a meeting bringing together representatives of local authorities, productive sectors and scientific institutions from Macedonia and Western Thrace with a government delegation. During the meeting, he presented a package of projects prepared by Yassıköy Municipality addressing both the municipality’s immediate needs and wider development priorities for Rodopi and the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The six proposals include the establishment of a Beekeeping Park in the Narlıköy–Büyük Müsellim fire-affected area, the construction of a municipal sports center, a new police headquarters, 30 to 50 affordable social housing units, the development of a tourism route connecting the Thracian Meteora, the Old Kuruçay Bridge and Lake Boru, and the creation of a Regional Trade and Logistics Center.
Beekeeping Park planned for fire-affected area
One of the municipality’s proposals is the creation of a Beekeeping Park in the fire-affected Narlıköy–Büyük Müsellim area.
The project aims to support the environmental restoration of the area while strengthening local beekeeping and connecting apiculture with agricultural production and agrotourism.
According to the municipality, the initiative could contribute both to the recovery of the fire-damaged landscape and to the development of new economic activities in the region.
Municipal sports center proposed
Yassıköy Municipality has also proposed the construction of a municipal sports center featuring a multi-purpose indoor sports hall.
The facility is intended to serve children, young people and local sports clubs while potentially becoming an important sports hub for Western Rodopi.
New Yassıköy police headquarters
Another proposal involves the construction of a new Yassıköy Police Department building on municipally owned land.
The planned modern facility would be designed to meet the operational needs of the Hellenic Police while strengthening public security infrastructure and the state’s institutional presence in the area.
30 to 50 affordable social housing units
Yassıköy Municipality has proposed the construction of between 30 and 50 affordable social housing units.
The housing would initially be intended to address the accommodation needs of employees at the new Komotini Hospital.
The municipality also expects the project to help attract young workers to the region and encourage them to settle and remain in Rodopi over the long term.
Tourism route linking natural and cultural sites
A comprehensive tourism development project covering the Thracian Meteora, the Old Kuruçay Bridge and Lake Boru was also presented.
The proposal includes restoring the Old Kuruçay Bridge, highlighting archaeological and natural attractions in the surrounding area, establishing new tourism routes and developing alternative forms of tourism.
The municipality sees the route as an opportunity to combine the region’s natural and cultural heritage with sustainable tourism development.
Regional Trade and Logistics Center
The sixth proposal calls for the establishment of a Regional Trade and Logistics Center, taking advantage of Yassıköy’s strategic position near the Egnatia motorway and routes leading toward the Greek-Bulgarian border.
The proposed center would include logistics infrastructure, heavy-vehicle parking areas, storage facilities and cargo transshipment infrastructure.
The municipality argues that such a facility could strengthen the region’s role as a transportation and trade hub while supporting local economic activity.
