Turkish national charged after shooting at Greek intelligence officers
According to AMNA, a 49-year-old Turkish national has been charged with attempted manslaughter following a gunfire incident involving officers of Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) in the northern city of Thessaloniki. The incident took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, in the Thermi area.
According to Greek authorities, the suspect allegedly opened fire from his jeep on a vehicle carrying EYP officers. He then fled the scene accompanied by two other individuals, also believed to be Turkish nationals. Law enforcement initiated an extensive manhunt, employing roadblocks and drone surveillance to track the suspects.
The main suspect was eventually located hiding in a shed in the village of Kato Vyrsini, in the Rhodopi region, near the Bulgarian border. Authorities believe he was attempting to cross into Bulgaria via remote mountain routes. His vehicle was later discovered abandoned on a farm road roughly 2 kilometers outside Gerakarou in Thessaloniki.
The Thessaloniki Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against the man, including attempted manslaughter by complicity—a felony—as well as illegal possession and use of firearms, both misdemeanors. The two other suspects remain at large and are facing charges of aiding and abetting attempted manslaughter and acting as accessories after the fact. Arrest warrants have been issued for all three individuals.
The detained man is being held at the General Police Headquarters of Thessaloniki. He is expected to appear in court on Monday to testify before the investigating magistrate.
The incident has raised security concerns and highlighted the cooperation between police and intelligence services in responding to threats.
