Man in Laconia arrested after hiding father’s body in freezer for years
A 55-year-old man was arrested in Mystras, southern Greece, after allegedly hiding his father’s body in a freezer for about 2.5 years to continue receiving his pension, police said.
The case came to light after the Laconia Police Directorate received information that the 90-year-old man, born in 1936, had not been seen for an extended period.
The son reportedly told police that his father had moved to Athens, but the man’s daughter said she had not seen her father for years and that he had been living with his son.
Body discovered in abandoned hotel
Police and a magistrate searched a closed hotel owned by the 55-year-old, where he was living. In the basement, authorities found the elderly man’s body inside a freezer, along with an air pistol.
The son later admitted that his father had died of natural causes 2.5 years ago and that he concealed the death to continue receiving pension payments.
A forensic team from Sparta examined the scene, and an autopsy was ordered to determine further details.
Charges filed against son
Authorities filed a case against the man for false testimony, repeated fraud and violations of weapons legislation.
The suspect was expected to appear before a magistrate as the investigation continues.
