The rally was organized by collectives, labor unions and other groups to mark the 13th anniversary of a 2013 armed attack outside the offices of the far-right Golden Dawn party, in which two people were fatally wounded.

Demonstrators gathered near the Neo Irakleio ISAP station to prevent far-right groups from holding public gatherings in the area.

According to a police statement, the group attacked riot police at the intersection of Irakleiou Avenue and Iroon Polytechniou Street, damaging police equipment.

Officers used crowd-control measures to repel the attack, police said, adding that the incident was brought under control and the march continued safely.

The attackers subsequently joined the main body of the march, which returned to its starting point. Demonstrators then dispersed in different directions, police said.

Authorities had deployed additional security forces around the station and at key locations in the northern suburbs to prevent clashes.
