Thessaloniki under tight security ahead of TIF

Thessaloniki is set to come under a heavy security presence ahead of the opening of the Thessaloniki International Fair, with the Hellenic Police preparing one of its largest security operations in recent years.

Enhanced security measures will begin on Thursday, September 3, and are expected to peak from September 3 to 6, when the prime minister’s speech and the traditional press conference will take place.

Large police deployment

More than 3,500 police officers are expected to be deployed, with 55 police units from Athens, Thessaloniki and other parts of Greece reinforcing the operation.

Officers will be positioned around the TIF grounds and at key locations across the city center. Their main tasks will include protecting political figures, securing official events and managing planned rallies and marches.

Special attention will be given to the movements and escorts of political figures, as well as the security of demonstrations expected during the fair.

Major traffic restrictions expected

Police services from across the country will take part in the operation, while traffic police will have a prominent role as extensive traffic restrictions are expected across central Thessaloniki.

The measures will mainly affect roads around the TIF grounds and major central arteries, where political events, labor rallies and demonstrations are scheduled to take place.

Security operation to continue

Although the security operation is expected to reach its peak during the first weekend of the fair, heightened measures will remain in place until the TIF concludes.

Authorities have taken into account the presence of political figures, as well as the large rallies and demonstrations traditionally held in Thessaloniki during the event.

Thousands of police officers will remain on standby to ensure the smooth running of events, manage traffic and respond quickly to any incidents or tensions.
