Hunting ban near Greek-Bulgarian border sparks calls for review
The Hunting Association of Sapes, “Artemis”, has called for the lifting of a hunting ban covering an area extending 500 metres from the Greek-Bulgarian border, arguing that the restriction introduced for the 2026–2027 hunting season represents a change from the previous regulations.
The issue has also been brought before the Greek Parliament through a parliamentary question submitted by Elias Papadakis, an MP for Evros representing the Greek Solution party, to the Minister of Environment and Energy.
Papadakis is seeking clarification on the reasons behind the introduction of the restriction along the Greek-Bulgarian border and whether the ministry intends to amend the relevant decision to allow hunting activities to resume in the affected area.
HUNTERS DEMAND CLARIFICATION
According to the Hunting Association of Sapes, the prohibition is included in the regulatory decision governing the 2026–2027 hunting season and affects hunters in the border region of Thrace.
In its announcement, the association called for clear answers and a reassessment of the measure, stressing that restrictions affecting an entire area should be accompanied by a clear justification and meaningful consultation with local stakeholders.
“The hunters of border-region Thrace are seeking clear answers and a review of the decision,” the association said.
The organisation added that the matter is now before the competent ministry and that it is awaiting an official response and further developments.
