Long queues at Evzoni border crossing as biometric checks suspended

Long lines of vehicles, hours of waiting and delays for drivers and passengers have become a daily scene at the Evzoni border crossing, one of the main entry points for Balkan tourists visiting Greece.

On Monday, Aug. 4, the crossing recorded 42,000 vehicle movements, with waiting times exceeding three hours. Heavy traffic continued on Wednesday morning, as many travelers arrived early in an effort to avoid longer queues later in the day.

Biometric checks temporarily halted to ease congestion

Authorities suspended biometric checks for travelers in an effort to speed up border procedures and reduce congestion at the crossing.

The measure was introduced as daily traffic volumes surpassed 35,000 crossings, creating significant pressure on border operations.

Delays affect tourism in Halkidiki

The prolonged waiting times have also affected tourism flows to Halkidiki, according to local industry representatives.

Halkidiki Hoteliers Association President Grigoris Tassios said the situation had a major impact on bookings during May and June, as well as last-minute reservations during the current period.

He estimated that the disruption has contributed to an approximately 5% loss in tourism demand.

Border station renovation planned for 2027

The Evzoni customs station is expected to undergo renovation in 2027, with plans to increase the number of vehicle lanes and reduce waiting times for travelers.
