Ferry fares remain stable for Summer
Ferry ticket prices for economy-class passengers in Greece will remain largely unchanged this summer, despite rising operating costs and a challenging economic environment.
According to ferry operators’ pricing policies, economy-class fares on most routes are broadly in line with last summer’s levels, offering relief to travelers during the peak holiday season.
Rising costs pressure operators
The fare stability comes despite significant increases in fuel costs, which account for more than half of ferry companies’ operating expenses. Industry data indicate that several smaller operators are facing sharply reduced profit margins, while some are operating at a loss.
While economy-class fares have been largely protected, some targeted increases have been introduced for premium services, including cabins on certain long-distance routes. Several operators have also reduced discounts offered through customer loyalty programs, with some benefits cut from 20% to 10%.
Government measures help curb fare increases
Industry sources say the decision to keep economy fares stable reflects both commercial considerations and government efforts to ease pressure on ferry operators.
The Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy has introduced support measures, including a 50% reduction in port fees and compensation payments for mandatory passenger discounts required by law. The compensation scheme is estimated to cost the state €55-57 million annually.
The government also continues to fund the Transport Equivalent program, which subsidizes part of the travel and freight costs for residents and businesses on Greek islands.
The measures have helped ferry companies avoid broad-based fare increases ahead of the busy summer travel season.
