Hailstorm causes major crop damage in Dedeağaç region
Farmers from the Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) area met with officials from the local ELGA office to report widespread agricultural damage caused by a severe hailstorm that struck the region on Wednesday.
The storm, accompanied by strong winds, hit around 5 p.m. and damaged thousands of acres of crops, including cotton, vegetables, legumes, corn and walnut trees.
Severe losses reported
According to the Agricultural and Livestock Association of Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli), some crops suffered total destruction, particularly vegetable fields, while others recorded losses of 70-80%.
Storm also causes local damage
The storm brought heavy winds, intense rainfall and lightning activity, causing fallen trees in Kumçiftliği (Nea Orestiada).
In Semadirek (Samothrace), a lightning strike damaged a pumping station generator supplying water to a small settlement, with repair work underway.
