Greece’s public debt reaches €360.1 billion at end of first quarter of 2026
Greece’s public debt stood at €360.106 billion at the end of the first quarter of 2026, down from €366.312 billion recorded during the same period a year earlier, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The General Government deficit was recorded at 2.2% of GDP, while General Government debt stood at 143.5% of GDP during the first quarter of the year.
According to ELSTAT’s quarterly non-financial accounts for the General Government, state revenues increased to €26.375 billion in the first quarter of 2026, compared with €24.509 billion in the same quarter of 2025.
Revenue from income and property taxes rose to €4.613 billion from €4.469 billion, while social security contributions increased to €7.935 billion from €7.672 billion over the same period.
General Government expenditure reached €27.667 billion, compared with €25.294 billion in the first quarter of 2025. Primary expenditure rose to €25.733 billion from €23.416 billion.
Spending on employee compensation increased to €6.372 billion from €6.018 billion, while social benefits rose to €12.416 billion from €11.660 billion. Subsidies also increased, reaching €589 million compared with €472 million a year earlier.
The figures provide an overview of Greece’s fiscal position amid continued efforts to reduce public debt levels while managing government spending and social obligations.
