PASOK elects congress delegates in Rhodope and İskeçe ahead of Athens Convention
The elections drew strong participation in both regions, widely interpreted within the party as a sign of renewed unity and organizational momentum.
High Participation in Rhodope
According to official results released by the regional congress committee, more than 2,500 party members voted in Rhodope, resulting in the election of 49 delegates. These representatives will come from municipalities including Gümülcine, Yassıköy, Maronia-Şapçı, and Kozlukebir.
44 Delegates Selected in İskeçe
In İskeçe, around 900 members participated in the vote, electing a total of 44 delegates. Fourteen of them were chosen from the city center, while the rest represent municipalities such as Bulustra, Mustafçova, and Topiros.
However, officials noted that two additional delegate positions could not be filled due to gender quota requirements and minimum vote thresholds.
Disputes Over Election Process
The process was not without controversy. Local political figure İrfan Hacıgene criticized the lack of adequate communication regarding candidacy procedures, raising concerns about transparency.
In response, Argiris Plesias, coordinator of the İskeçe Congress Organization Committee, rejected the claims, stating that the elections were conducted in a transparent and fair manner.
Nationwide Turnout Signals Party Revival
Nationwide, more than 175,000 members participated in the internal elections, with approximately 4,000 delegates elected across the country.
Party officials point that the high turnout reflects PASOK’s grassroots strength and signals potential political resurgence ahead of the Athens congress.
