New era in addiction treatment in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: Centers to open in İskeçe, Gümülcine, and Kavala
The Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) Region is launching a new initiative to strengthen its fight against addiction. Under the “Eastern Macedonia–Thrace 2021–2027 Regional Program”, the National Organization for the Prevention and Treatment of Addictions (EOPAE) has received €4,298,050.72 in funding to establish new treatment and prevention centers.
The project aims to create modern, multi-functional structures focused on the prevention, harm reduction, and treatment of addiction. New facilities will be set up in İskeçe, Kavala, and Gümülcine, offering specialized services to individuals and communities affected by substance use and behavioral addictions.
Regional Commitment to Public Health
Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis emphasized that combating addiction is a cornerstone of both public health and social solidarity:
“Addiction prevention and treatment are essential to community well-being. Through the establishment of modern centers in İskeçe, Kavala, and Gümülcine, we aim to provide tangible support to our citizens. Once again, our region is investing in human life — in recovery, rehabilitation, and social reintegration. Our commitment is not just in words, but in action.”
The facilities were designed in accordance with Health Ministry guidelines and epidemiological data, focusing on two core pillars of addiction policy: treatment and harm reduction.
Overview of the New Centers
İskeçe Addiction Treatment Unit: Will provide medication-assisted therapy, psychosocial support, and individualized counseling.
Kavala Youth Multipurpose Center: Will offer specialized rehabilitation and support services for young people struggling with alcohol, drug, gambling, or internet addiction.
Kavala Mobile Intervention Unit: Will reach active substance users in the field to reduce health risks associated with psychoactive substance use.
Gümülcine Multipurpose Addiction Center: Will deliver comprehensive counseling, therapy, and rehabilitation programs for adults.
Each center will operate with a team of qualified healthcare and social service professionals and is expected to begin functioning in leased facilities managed by EOPAE.
Through this initiative, the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region aims to enhance its capacity to combat addiction and to provide sustainable, community-centered support for individuals in need.
