Jet2 prepares for major expansion in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
The development follows an agreement between the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and Jet2, with company representatives making several visits to Thasos in recent months to prepare for the airline’s planned entry into the region during the summer 2027 season.
Jet2 presents initial findings on Thasos destination
Speaking to ERT Kavala radio, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism Panagiotis Archontis said Jet2 teams from different branches had visited Thasos several times as part of preparations for the airline’s expansion.
According to Archontis, the latest delegation presented initial findings from its research into Thasos as a tourism destination and discussed potential areas for further cooperation with the municipality.
“Our goal is to bring airlines to both Kavala and Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) and strengthen our airports,” Archontis said.
He explained that the process remains at an early stage, while a communications campaign is scheduled to begin in November under an agreement supported financially by the regional authority.
Thasos municipality backs tourism promotion efforts
Archontis said Jet2 representatives were highly satisfied with Thasos as a destination and that several issues were discussed that could further improve the island’s tourism offering.
The Municipality of Thasos also reaffirmed its willingness to support promotional initiatives for the island and to assist the regional authority in its efforts to attract and develop new air connections.
Working groups will continue meeting to ensure that all parties are fully coordinated ahead of the next tourism season.
Regional authorities expect more air carriers
Archontis expressed optimism that the Region’s Air Connect programme could help attract additional airlines to the area.
He said the objective is not only to establish Jet2 connections but also potentially bring additional air carriers to both Kavala and Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) airports, strengthening the region’s international air connectivity and tourism infrastructure.
