Kompsatos bridge set to become a landmark in Rhodope

The Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region plans to illuminate the Kompsatos bridge with modern LED lighting designed to highlight its architectural structure and create a distinctive nighttime identity.

The Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Region is planning to turn the new Kompsatos bridge into a landmark for the area through the installation of a modern architectural lighting system.

The project involves the procurement and installation of LED lighting fixtures designed to illuminate and highlight the bridge's architectural and structural features.

At its recent Regional Council meeting on August 10, the council approved an allocation of €237,559.20 in the regional budget for the project.

Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis had previously highlighted the lighting plans during the bridge's inauguration, describing them as discreet, modern and energy-efficient. The system is designed to showcase the bridge's architecture and structural form without causing visual disturbance for drivers.

Lighting to highlight the bridge's structural features
According to the plans, the lighting will highlight several key elements of the bridge, including the vertical members of the side barriers, the bridge towers and supporting columns, the internal longitudinal recesses of the structure, and the barriers running along the roadway.

The primary lighting scheme will use white light, while selected areas will feature dynamic RGB lighting.

The RGB system will allow the colours to be adjusted for national anniversaries, local celebrations, cultural activities and major events.

A new nighttime identity for the area
The regional administration says the project is intended to give the bridge a distinctive identity after dark and transform it from a transport structure into a visual landmark.

“With this intervention, the bridge will not function only as a modern and safe infrastructure project. It will acquire its own nighttime identity and become a recognisable landmark, a modern point of reference and outward-looking symbol for the Municipality of Yassıköy (Iasmos), Rhodope (Rodopi) and our entire Region,” Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis said.

The initiative is expected to enhance the visual presence of the bridge while maintaining an energy-efficient approach to architectural illumination.
