Minority Rights Forum in Thessaloniki: Turkish Minority problems expressed
At the human rights forum held in Thessaloniki, Western Thrace Councilors Union President Ahmet Kara drew attention to the problems of the Turkish Minority.
A human rights forum was held in Thessaloniki on Saturday, October 21, in cooperation with the United Macedonian Diaspora and the Krste Misirkov association.
For almost 200 years since its foundation, Greece has subjected non-Greek and Christian Orthodox communities and minorities to denial and assimilation policies in line with the country's goal of becoming a nation state. One of the biggest victims of these assimilationist and denials’ policies was the Turks of Western Thrace and the other was the Macedonians living in the Northern region of Greece. However, these ethnic minorities are now coming together and organizing events to make their voices heard and attract attention worldwide.
In recent years, these minorities have been coming together to protect their human, minority and cultural rights, and one of these events took place in Thessaloniki on Saturday, October 21.
The human rights forum in Thessaloniki, organized in collaboration with the United Macedonian Diaspora and the Krste Misirkov Association, provided a platform for these minorities to raise their voices.
The Chairman of the FEP Party also attended the forum and supported it. FEP Party Chairman Çiğdem Asafoğlu, FEP Party Deputy Chairman Ali Ali Dayı Hüseyin, Central Committee Member Koray Bağdatlı and BAKEŞ General Manager Pervin Hayrullah also honored this important event.
Ahmet Kara, President of the Councilors' Union, drew attention to the problems of the Turkish Minority and emphasized that steps should be taken to solve these problems. In addition, Macedonian Minority linguists drew attention to the importance of minority rights and bilingualism and emphasized the necessity of protecting these values.
This forum, with its emphasis on human and minority rights, was noted as an important step towards making the voices of minorities heard more loudly and defending their rights.
The efforts of minorities to act together and protect their cultural identities remind us of the importance of respect for human rights and diversity.
