Deputy Baran submits a parliamentary question for Şahin post office
Xanthi PASOK MP Burhan Baran raised the issue of the closure of the post office in Şahin in a parliamentary question. In his March 31 parliamentary question, Baran stated that the situation in question has caused concern among the residents of the region.
In his parliamentary question to the Minister of Digital Administration, Kyriakos Pierakakakis, Baran pointed out that the post office in the village of Sahin serves approximately 8,000 people and that the thought of its definitive closure would make life difficult for the residents of Sahin and the surrounding area.
MP Baran stated the following in his parliamentary question:
"The thought of the definitive closure of the ELTA (State Post Office Agency) unit in the village of Ehinos (Şahin), which belongs to the Miki (Mustafçova) Municipality, has caused great concern to the local and surrounding communities. Currently, the post office in Ehinos (Şahin) serves approximately 8,000 citizens and business owners. It also provides financial services and courier services not only to the people of Echinos but also to the whole Balkan region. In addition to all kinds of postal transactions, pension payments, tax payments, payment of electricity and water bills, and many other transactions are made through this post office. In the event of the permanent closure of the post office, those who do their business here will unfortunately have to go to post offices further away. The morphology of the Balkan branch is such that the settlements are very far apart in kilometers. If we take this factor into account, the seriousness of the situation increases.
Usually the centers with the authority to make government decisions are located in big cities, and of course the people who make these decisions have many alternatives to meet their daily needs. It is therefore very difficult for them to understand how vital it is to close a local post office. In addition, many services in our area are both more difficult and more expensive to access.
Finally, I would like to mention that the decisions taken by the central management of ELTA (the State Post Office Authority) have led to a reduction in the number of civil servants and an increase in the number of contract workers. The occasional shortage of workers has in turn led to overworking of the civil servants, disruption of the service and, unfortunately, to operational problems in the local post offices.
The citizens of Xanthi Prefecture do not deserve to be treated as second class citizens. The government is solely responsible for the development or decline of our region and therefore, I ask the competent minister;
What decisions do you intend to take to avoid the closure of the post office in Ehinos (Şahin), belonging to the municipality of Miki (Mustafçova), Xanthi Prefecture?"
