Dendias: Thrace key to Greece, major military housing plan underway
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias highlighted the strategic importance of Thrace during a visit to the headquarters of the 21st Armored Brigade in Komotini on Friday, stressing that a major housing program is underway to improve living conditions for Armed Forces personnel in the region.
Dendias announced that 271 new housing units are currently being built in Thrace. Nationwide, the program provides for the construction of 10,500 homes and the renovation of 7,000 more, describing it as the largest housing initiative in modern Greek history.
He emphasized the importance of supporting military families, particularly in border areas, noting that improved living standards are key to strengthening personnel morale. The housing plan forms part of a broader social support package that includes childcare facilities, assisted living for the elderly and lower prices at military stores.
Referring to Komotini’s location at the eastern borders of both Greece and the European Union, Dendias underlined the geopolitical significance of the region. He also pointed to the broader “Agenda 2030” reform, aimed at enhancing the Armed Forces’ footprint in Thrace, especially following the strategic upgrade of the port of Alexandroupoli.
During his visit, Dendias was briefed on the brigade’s mission and training activities and held meetings with local officials and reserve officers.
The minister also toured the construction site of the new General Hospital of Komotini, funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. He praised the project’s design, calling it an architectural masterpiece, and stressed that it will provide high-level healthcare services not only to Thrace but to the wider Balkan region.
Dendias thanked the Foundation and its leadership for their contribution, expressing hope that the new hospital will soon serve as a landmark project for the region.
