The first case was detected on August 1 in a sheep flock in Rhodope, confirmed by laboratory results. The following day, checks were conducted on a farm in Drama, which housed 350 animals.

After the Athens Veterinary Laboratory confirmed positive diagnoses in two flocks, the animals were culled, and protection zones were established. Veterinary teams have since been monitoring the disease within these zones.

The ongoing inspections aim to gather new data from sheep and goat farms within the protection zones and surrounding areas. The Director of Veterinary and Agricultural Economy, Nikos Fotinias, explained, "Our goal during these inspections is to examine whether there has been any movement of animal flocks at shared watering points and pastures. This allows us to visit units closest to positive cases, check for symptoms, and determine if samples need to be taken."
