Özgür Ferhat calls for special incentives for Gümülcine industrial zone

Rhodope MP Özgür Ferhat has called on the Greek government to introduce special incentives for the Gümülcine Industrial Zone, arguing that stronger infrastructure, new investment support and improved financing mechanisms are needed to protect the region’s industrial competitiveness.

Ferhat submitted a parliamentary question to the Minister of National Economy and Finance and the Minister of Development, requesting the preparation of a comprehensive development plan for the future of the industrial zone.

Located in the Rodop region of Western Thrace, the Gümülcine Industrial Zone is described as one of the key production centers in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. It provides employment for hundreds of people and makes a significant contribution to the regional economy.

However, Ferhat’s parliamentary question highlights growing challenges facing businesses in the industrial zone, including rising production costs, infrastructure shortcomings and insufficient investment.

Border location creates additional competitive pressure
The parliamentary question also points to the competitive pressure created by tax incentives and investment schemes available in neighboring countries.

As a border region, Rhodope faces increasing competition from neighboring economies offering more attractive conditions for businesses and investors, according to Ferhat.

He argued that maintaining the economic potential of the Gümülcine Industrial Zone and attracting new investment will require special tax incentives, investment support and new financing mechanisms.

Four questions directed at the government
Ferhat asked the government whether it plans to prepare a comprehensive modernization program for the Gümülcine Industrial Zone.

He also sought clarification on four key issues:

  • Whether special tax incentives will be introduced for businesses operating in the industrial zone.
  • Whether new investment support programs are being prepared.
  • Whether additional financing mechanisms will be made available to industrial businesses.
  • Whether the government is considering a special development and tax framework for industrial zones in Thrace.

Ferhat: “Development depends on strong industry and employment”
Commenting on the issue, Ferhat said the economic future of Rodop depends on strengthening production and employment.

“The development of Rodop is possible through strong industry, production and employment.”
He called for decisive measures to strengthen the Gümülcine Industrial Zone, encourage new investments and create more permanent employment opportunities in the region.

The initiative comes as businesses in Western Thrace continue to face pressure from higher production costs and competition for investment, making tax incentives and industrial infrastructure key issues for the region’s economic development.
